The Future Growth of Theta Nu Epsilon, Robert Herz, The Keys, 1919. This gives some idea of the kind of direction some members still had as late as 1919. This member’s opinions were in direct conflict with the unexpressed intentions of the national officers at that time. That is, the officers were at this time about to embark on a campaign to take the society away from anything like what the members were supporting. This was written by Robert Herz of the Iota Iota chapter at the University of Wisconsin. Brothers, far be it from me to lay claim to prophetic vision. Yet there appears before me on the horizon of the future so tremendous a glorification and potential development of Theta Nu Epsilon that it seems strange no one of you has yet commented on it. I see before me in the not too distant future a perfected national organization that is powerful in the extreme, influential beyond the wildest hopes of existing lodges, clubs, societies, and the like, whether local or national. I see a chain of club-houses in every city of importance in the country, and I see above the threshold the name of Theta Nu Epsilon emblazoned in letters that all may behold. Nor do I believe this all to be an impractical dream. No other organization,—the Freemasons, the Elks, Odd Fellows, ...or any of the many reputable orders that flourish nation-wide, has had half the chance to become great that Theta Nu Epsilon now possesses. Founded on the basis of good fellowship, bred in the centers of learning, the members of this intercollegiate society present what is unquestionably the closest-knit organization, yet large enough to be of consequence, of community leaders that the world has ever known. ...I see great movements enlisting our valued aid, and I see community projects pushed through only with the backing of the local chapter of Theta Nu Epsilon. Again we see that there is a compensating benefit for every loss. This is the beginning of a new era not only for Theta Nu Epsilon but for all of us. Our ideals remain unchanged. As surely as you sit in your seats Theta Nu Epsilon is starting now a career that will find its ultimate destiny in a body of influential citizens, guided ever by the highest motives, respected and admired by the great statesman as well as the ordinary citizen, sought after by the outsider, and rising ever to new heights of power. The opportunity is ours. The means of achievement lie in our possession. What shall be our answer?
